One way to resolve the problem of late payments is to charge late fees. Charging late fees is a practice that has been once disregarded but now very useful in terms of consumer collections. The main advantage of imposing late fees is that customers are forced to pay on time. Customers tend to change their behaviour when they know they will have to pay a penalty for being late. On the other hand, there are drawbacks to charging late fees. The company will be exposed to the risk of offending their customers. Building Good Customer Relationships

Inquire about the cause for delay and arrange a payment scheme when possible. This will encourage those customers to pay in increments. Both parties will benefit from this arrangement.

If a company discovers one or a few customers are consistently making late payments, it may be time for management to consider putting those customers’ accounts on hold.
